Digi Packs

I am going to look at examples of digi packs to help me decided how i would like mine to look. By getting inspiartion from professinols this will encourage me to produce a digi pack of a hight standard, this digi pack contains lots of inoformation, including a fold out including lyrics and pictures, this digi pack has lots of pictures to idenitfy the solo artist or band. The digi pack is very dark, this is because the genre of this band is heavy metal. My next Digi pack example is of oasis, this didgi pack is another example of matching the genre to the picrures, this is an accoustic album therefore they use accoustic guitar as the ront cover, this didig pack includes a disk and information but not a fold out like the previous. The next digi pack main image travels across the digi pack, i like this technique and will use it in my own.

cast

We have chosen to do a stop frame animation using fruit and vegetables. Therefore the characters we use must be loveable. After previously using fruit our group has experience of how to show emotions on small objects, we chose tomatoes because they come in small to large sizes and will be easy to draw on. When filming the couples we would prefer to use will be real couples as it will be a lot more believable, however we would need a lot of couples this could be a problem to find so many, therefore we could use people that actually know each other so there will be some connection between the two people.

Cast list:
Natalie & jack
Sophie & callum

Music grid sheets

treatment

Artist: Briscott

SongTitle: 3ft tall music video.

Genre: Acoustic

Target audience: easy listeners 14-35

Narrative:

On a bench: A montage of series different young couples aged 16, dressed in casual clothing and looking their age in loved up situations e.g. holding hands, cuddling, just generally looking happy together on a bench for the duration of 30 seconds. Each couple will be filmed for 3 seconds each, we will have 10 couples who know each other or are actually in a relationship to make the scene more believable. This will be filmed in mid shots; every couple will be in the exact same place as the previous couple. So when the editing is finished it will come together as a montage. This montage is being used to amplify the lyrics of being happy in a relationship and feeling close to someone special.

Garden: This will be the first small introduction of stop motion, we will take pictures of growing tomatoes over a period of time in close up shots when all the images are played after one another it will show the tomatoes growing up in a garden gradually over time, this amplifies the lyrics of ‘we’ve been growing up in the same old town from 3ft tall some of us met eyes’,. The main point of this small clip of animation is to show the tomatoes getting larger throughout there growth focusing on them still being together, this would be harder to do with people as it would involve using children, as none of our group have younger siblings it will be to hard to find a cast.

On a bench: a similar shot of the previous montage, however we will use slightly older couples aged 18 to enforce the idea of growing older with someone else, this again will be for 3 seconds each however this will not last as long as the previous montage, we will aim for about ten seconds. As before these shots will be filmed in mid shot.

Bathroom: This is another short clip of the tomatoes however this will actually be recorded. A recorded shot of the fruit sailing in a boat in a bath. This is being filmed instead of photographed as it will be impossible to capture all the sharp movements that will be made when the boat is sailing. This will be filmed close up so the camera can focus on the expressions drawn onto the tomatoes, also when close up the audience will not be able to see our hands pushing the boat along the water.

On a bench: a similar shot of the previous montage, however we will use slightly older couples to enforce the idea of growing older with someone else, this again will be for 3 seconds each however this will not last as long as the previous montage, we will aim for about ten seconds. As before these shots will be filmed in mid shot.

White background room: This will be our second use of a small stop motion animation, using post cards we will create a small background for the tomatoes to stand in front of, the postcards will be of places in the north east south and west, this is to match the lyrics of ‘we’ve been north east south and west, wouldn’t think of anything less now’. The tomatoes will be seen with small props that will move, the props will be stereotypical items of which post card is behind them.

Park: Montage of couples on a swing we decided to use a swing as it has connotations of youth as we really want the lyrics to be amplified as much as possible it will be similar shot to the previous montage, however we will use slightly older couples to enforce the idea of growing older with someone else, this again will be for 3 seconds each however this will not last as long as the previous montage, we will aim for about ten seconds. As before these shots will be filmed in mid shot.

Park: Another small clip of stop motion, the tomatoes will be swinging on the swings. This has to photographed in a close up to hide our hands moving the corners of the swing. When all the images are put together the swing will look like its moving by its self.

Bench: back to more couples a similar shot of the previous montage, however we will use slightly older couples to enforce the idea of growing older with someone else, this again will be for 3 seconds each however this will not last as long as the previous montage, we will aim for about ten seconds. As before these shots will be filmed in mid shot. Again filmed in mid shot yet close enough to be able to recognise the people are getting older

Park: Here will will film people just playing on a film, as the song gets more emotional we are thinking of using black and white as it will resemble a flash back, this could be a flash back of the older couples shown in the montage, this will be filmed in wide shot to capture all the chaos of youth.

Bathroom: Stop motion images of a tomatoes one with a little towel round it this will be filmed in a close up.

White background room: again using post cards we will create a small background for the tomatoes to stand in front of, the postcards will be of places in the north east south and west, this is to match the lyrics of ‘we’ve been north east south and west, wouldn’t think of anything less now’. The tomatoes will be seen with small props that will move, the props will be stereotypical items of which post card is behind them.

White background: Close up of tomato ketchup being squirted into the name of the song and artist, a final close up on the title then fade to black.

Costume

With our group video being partly in stop motion animation, obviously the fruit will not be wearing a costume apart from in some scenes they will be seen in stereotypical props to amplify the lyrics e.g. woolly hats, sun glasses and scarf’s will be drawn onto the tomatoes. To go with the tomato couple we will film other couples in everyday casual clothing the casual clothes will make the staged couples more realistic and more believable. Also they should be dressed correctly for their age as this will look good for when we want to capture couples growing older.

fan Interview

How did you discover and why do you like Briscott?

I have known Andy for several years now, from when he started out playing guitar and writing songs for fun and seriously. His music has over time improved lyrically and emotionally, using a wider range of subject and skills to make his music better.

Briscott’s music has inspirational values from such artists such as ‘Bright Eyes’ and ‘Jack Johnson’, which is why I like Briscott’s music especially as its original but with many inspirations.

What’s your favourite song?

My favourite song by Briscott is track 6 on the CD which is called ‘3 feet tall’. I especially like this song as it has a lot of meaning to it and emotional value about growing up as children and being still together as a couple when they’re older.

lyric analysis

Lyrics

We’ve been growing up in the same old time from 3 feet tall some of us met eyes
Who knew we’d be sharing secrets for then
Things have changed yes we have changed but together we have stayed
No one knew wed be sharing secrets for ever
Thanks for this complex world
That dragged the land away from the sea so we could be together using the waves for free

We’ve been north east south and west
Wouldn’t think of anything less now
Like the waves were longing to be free
We’ve been backwards forward up and down in life
Just trying to do what’s right in life
I love the way you we joke around always spell bound
Photographs films places we’ve been put them in a box seal them in
Rain days will never ever ever be doomed

Thanks for this complex world that dragged the land away from the sea
So we could be together using the waves for free
We’ve been north east south and west wouldn’t think of any less now
Like the waves were longing to be free
I know were meant to be together we’ve been climbing trees together
Scraping our knees
Together forever

(sniffle)

Thanks for this complex world that dragged the land away from the sea
So we could be together using the waves for free
We’ve been north east south and west wouldn’t think any less now
Like the waves were longing to be free

I think were free

Codes and conventions

After taking our survey results into consideration we thought we should also follow the codes and convetions that apear in the music videos that we have analysed over the past weeks.

The most common factor throughout the videos was that the video amplified the lyrics in the song. When we begin to storyboard our video, we shall take this into high consideration.
How we portray the artist is also very important, the genre of music depends on the representation we will use, we have chose a rock band. Our video will be very simialr to those of other rock bands. This includes a performance which is a common aspect of a rock video, this will iclude lip syncing. To help portray the artist we will also consider the mise en scene to emphasise the bands personality.
When we start to edit out video, we need to make sure that the edits match the pace of the music.
There should be a wide variety of camera angles, alot of close ups, tracking shots and crane shots should be used to follow the usual conventions of a music video.
The simple narrative of our videos should be linear as most videos are, also it should come to a close, a music video is a short film which should come to an ending, no cliff hanger will be in our music video. The story line should be quite simple, yet not boring. To match the simple narrative we will use a simple realistic setting, this is a very common convention in the music videos we have watched. We need to attract people with our video, we will use special effects however in the time space that we have we will have to use quite simple special effects, which is an advantage to us as most videos use simple effects such as slow motion very often.

Survey Results

The results of our survey are as followed:

When we asked 30 people questions about what they preferred to see in a music video, to help us create the perfect video for our target audience.

In the 30 people that we asked 16 were female and 14 were male.

4 of whom were 16 8 were eighteen and 18 were seventeen, this concludes that we will have to be basing our music video around the specific results, in summery we will have to use ideas and points based on the age and gender.

The majority of the people we asked only watch videos for less than one hour a day, therefore a video should really statnd out and intrigue the audience into watching ours.

The most popular music channel was MTV and was also the most popular to watch. Our video should be something very simliar to those MTV play this should create a bigger audience and better feedback.

The preferred music genre is rock; therefore we will use a rock band to correspond with our results.

However the most popular music video is Beyonce - Single ladies which is a poplar R&B artist. Therefore our video could have some elements of an R&B video. This however would be hard to create as most videos for R&B artists involve clubs, which our group will not be able to film in legally.

The least popular music video was Lady Gaga – Poker face and Westlife – Mandy which are both pop songs so we can gather from our results that pop videos are the least popular.

The most popular artist at the moment which is suggested from our results is Calvin Harris, who is an electro artist, the editing in the videos are usually fast paced to match his up tempo genre.

When asked if they prefer narrative or performance based videos 18 people prefer narrative where as 12 people like performance based videos, this contradicts with our pervious result of the preferred genre being rock as most rock videos are usually performance based.

Furthermore when asked if they prefer linear to non-linear, 18 people prefer linear and 12 people prefer non linear, therefore our music video shall be linear.

The most popular setting for a music video is a city with 8 votes, this could be a possible setting for our music video, however it could be quite a problem trying to organise trying to get the group together at the same period of time in this setting. The next most popular areas are a house and a field which both got 6 votes, these areas are a lot easier to get to and organise so they could be more convenient setting to shoot our music video.

We asked the question, should the video include the band or artist? Our results show that people prefer to see the artist/band, this could correspond with our most popular genre of rock.

We then asked if they should play as themselves or a character, themselves was the most popular choice.

Our results also show that the audience prefer a music video to illustrate the lyrics. So when choosing our song we as a group need to focus on the lyrics, which ever song has the most simple lyrics to portray we will use.

When asked if they prefer slow or fast music, they chose fast, therefore our music video should correspond with our results and be faced paced editing.

Yet the video should be realistic as this is the preferred choice of our target audience. This will be easier for our group, as we have a limited time.

The video will also be in colour as only 13 people enjoy this effect. This is ironic as the most popular video, Beyonce - Single ladies, is in Black & white throughout the video.

We have also decided to not use a dance routine in our video as 19 people dont like to see them this is another benifit for our group as we do not have the time to choreograph a routine.

Were going to have an animal because this is what they want to see. An animal will automatically make our video more loveable, the majoirty of our questionares were answered by girls, stereotypically they will really enjoy the cute loveable animal aspect of our video.

We also asked what the audience would like to see in the digi pack, a DVD was the most popular choice, as this could be quite hard to produce we could opt for the second highest result which was artwork.
